Bench grinders are all-purpose grinding machines that use heavy stone grinding wheels at the ends of a rotating motor shaft. All bench grinder wheels have centered mounting holes, known as arbors. Each specific type of bench grinder needs a correctly sized grinding wheel, and this size is either marked on the grinder, for example, a 6-inch bench grinder takes 6-inch diameter grinding wheel, or the original wheel is measured to ascertain its diameter.
Grinding Wheel Removal
With the power off, unscrew the shield, that surrounds the grinding wheel. Locate the center arbor nut, and unscrew the nut with a wrench, holding the wheel in one hand so it doesn’t rotate, advises The Precision Tools. Since the grinding wheel rotates toward you, the right-side wheel nut is threaded as you’d typically expect and unscrews by turning the nut toward the front of the grinder. The left-side grinding wheel nut, in most cases, is reversed and unscrews by turning it toward the back of the grinder in an opposite rotation. Once unscrewed, remove the nut and the holding washer.
Grinding Wheel Attachment
Slip the grinding wheel arbor hole over the axle shaft and press the holding washer into place. Thread the nut onto the axle, reverse threading it on the left side if applicable, hold the grinding wheel in your hand and tighten down the nut. Replace the shield.
